Wedding Ring Size Guide

Everything you need to size wedding bands correctly — including how band width affects fit and the best time to measure.

Wedding rings are worn every day for a lifetime, making correct sizing more important than for almost any other piece of jewellery. Unlike engagement rings — which you often size alone — both partners should be measured professionally for their wedding bands.

How Band Width Affects Sizing

This is the most commonly overlooked factor in wedding ring sizing. Wider bands feel tighter than narrow bands of the same size because more surface area contacts the finger. As a rule:

Band WidthSizing AdjustmentNotes
Under 4mmNormal sizeSlim bands — no adjustment needed
4–6mmNormal or +½ sizeStandard ring width — minimal adjustment
6–8mm+½ size upClassic men's band width — size up
8–10mm+1 full size upWide bands need a full size increase
Over 10mm+1 to +1.5 sizes upVery wide bands — always try before buying

Best Time to Get Sized

For wedding bands specifically, timing your sizing appointment matters:

  • Get sized at the end of the day when fingers are at their largest
  • Avoid sizing in extreme cold or heat
  • Get sized at least 4–6 months before the wedding to allow time for custom orders and adjustments
  • If you're planning to lose or gain weight before the wedding, factor this in — fingers change with body weight
  • Women should get sized after their engagement ring fitting, as the two rings are worn together and should be comfortable as a stack

Comfort Fit vs. Standard Fit

Many wedding bands are available in "comfort fit" — a rounded interior profile that slides on and off more easily and feels more comfortable during daily wear. Comfort fit bands typically feel about half a size larger than standard (flat interior) bands of the same nominal size, so you may need to go half a size smaller when choosing comfort fit.

Matching Wedding Bands to Engagement Rings

Many couples have their engagement ring and wedding band custom fitted together. Important considerations:

  • The wedding band should slide snugly against the engagement ring without gaps
  • Curved or contoured bands are designed to wrap around a solitaire — these require precise sizing together
  • Consider trying both rings on together at the jeweller to confirm the combined feel
Professional recommendation: For wedding bands — rings you'll wear every single day — always have a professional jeweller size both partners in-person. Bring the engagement ring to the appointment so both can be fitted together.
