How to Measure Your Ring Size

Everything you need to know about finding your exact ring size — from home methods to professional tools.

Finding your correct ring size is one of the most important steps before buying any ring. Whether you're shopping online, buying a gift, or ordering a bespoke piece, getting the size right avoids costly resizing and disappointment. This guide covers every approach.

The Quickest At-Home Method

The paper strip method is the fastest and most reliable home measurement technique:

  1. 1
Get a thin strip of paper

Cut a strip roughly 10mm wide. A receipt works perfectly.

  2. 2
    Wrap around your finger base

Wrap snugly around the base of the intended finger. Check it passes over the knuckle.

  3. 3
    Mark and measure

Mark where it overlaps and measure in mm. This is your circumference.

  4. 4
    Convert to ring size

Use our ring size chart to find your US, UK, or EU size.

Professional In-Store Sizing

Any jeweller will size your finger for free using a ring mandrel or a set of ring sizing gauges. This is the gold standard for accuracy and takes less than two minutes. We always recommend this for:

  • Engagement rings and wedding bands
  • Rings over a certain price point
  • Rings that cannot be resized (e.g. full eternity bands, some gemstone settings)
  • Buying a ring as a surprise gift for someone

How to Find Someone Else's Ring Size

Buying a ring as a gift without the recipient knowing? Here are the best tactics:

  • Borrow one of their rings — take a ring they wear on the intended finger and have a jeweller measure it, or measure the inside diameter yourself.
  • The string trick — while they sleep, carefully wrap a piece of string around their finger. Mark it and measure.
  • Ask a close friend or family member — someone who shops for jewellery with them may already know.
  • Use the average — if all else fails, size 6 (US) is the most common women's ring size; size 10 (US) for men. Both can be resized.

Factors That Affect Ring Size

Ring size isn't fixed. These factors can change your measurement by half a size or more:

🕐

Time of Day

Fingers are smallest in the morning and largest at the end of the day. Measure in the evening for the most representative size.

🌡️

Temperature

Cold weather shrinks fingers; heat expands them. Measure at a comfortable room temperature.

🧂

Salt & Diet

Salty foods cause water retention and finger swelling. Avoid measuring after a salty meal.

🤰

Pregnancy

Finger size changes significantly during and after pregnancy. Wait until after birth to size for permanent rings.

Remember: If you're between sizes, always choose the larger. A loose ring is far easier and cheaper to fix than one that's too tight.
